Mortar Matching
Procedures: In order to ensure a proper match, we need at least two samples for testing. Mortar Composition We determine the type of mortar mixes, sands, and other elements that compose the sample. We also check for known local contaminates that will affect the color or texture of the mortar. Digital Confirmation A sample is digitally confirmed to the new mortar formula. Determining Mortar Texture The texture of the match is determined by comparison to different grades of sand. Analysis of Mortar Color We analyzes the colors found and matches each color to the right tone to the database to determine tone color. The results from each of these sections are processed and combined into an exact mortar formula to match the original sample. Mortar Formula Confirmation This formula is then physically tested and visually confirmed before being sent back to you. Each formula is guaranteed to match (within a reasonable tone) in the color and texture to the samples provided from your home. Mold and Mildew may need to re-grow in the pores to complete the match. This part of natural aging we cannot recreate because these tones vary around your home and change throughout the year. Most mortar matches are not visible immediately upon drying.

Alamo Certified Mortar Matching - The First Step to Quality Repairs Our certified mortar matches are performed by our lab specialists. Each mortar sample is carefully inspected and analyzed to determine the grade of sand and color tones in them. After the samples are inspected and analyzed visually and digitally, the two results are compared and tested until a proper match is achieved. This formula is then physically tested, and visually and digitally confirmed, and sent to you (or Pre-Mixed). These matches are guaranteed to match within a reasonable tone to the original mortar. In most cases these matches are undetectable immediately upon drying. Some matches may look lighter than the original mortar due to the levels of mold and/or mildew in the surface. These tones are best left to nature to recreate because they will vary greatly around the home, and they die back at different times of the year.
Pre-Mix Mortars - Order mortar mixes premixed to your formula.
Acquiring a sample Use a hammer and chisel to remove the samples of mortar from the corners of the home or directly from one of the cracks. Then send us these items: 1. Send 2-3 samples of mortar which have been taken from the corners of the home, or from the specific work areas. 2. We will need a check or money order in the amount of $99.00 (US) for your mortar match and formula (or $85.00 for your matching and first bag of Pre-Mix Mortars. See Pre-Mix Mortars for more details) (Payments should be made payable to Alamo Masonry) or For your convenience we accept credit card payments through PAYPAL. (if paying through Paypal, print an extra copy of your receipt to enclose with the mortar samples.)
Additional things which we will need: 1. your name/company name 2. a contact phone number 3. a mailing or E-mail address for the return of your mortar formula 4. we also need the physical address of the project if it is different than the mailing address. 5. receipts for online purchase of mortar match or Pre-Mix Mortars if applicable
